Cork is the Winner
Cork Ireland came in as a winner at the Acrobatic Rock-n-Roll European Championship & Boogie-Woogie World Cup event that was held on May 18-19. The response of dancers, spectators and officials coming to Cork was positive and heartening. Praise was extended to the MTU Arena, the host dancers, event coordinators, and the people of Cork for a positive experience.
Over 1000 participants, athletes, spectators, and officials were entertained, wowed and danced to. 20 countries were represented in the competition that tested athleticism, coordination and rhythm in numerous dance categories. Over 21,000 people live-streamed the Event.
The French, Swiss, and Hungarian teams fielded the largest number of dancers, up to 100 in the case of France, with slightly smaller teams from Germany, Italy, Ukraine, Croatia, and Poland. Finland, Sweden, Slovakia, Slovenia, Austria and many more visited and performed in Cork. For full results go to www.wrrc.dance/results (World RocknRoll Confederation).
Standouts from the event included the winner, and new European Champion, Switzerland, in the Acrobatic Rock-n-Roll main class Free Style. This event features fast-paced footwork, spectacular twists, dives and double somersaults and is considered the most difficult of the events. Croatia captured the Acrobatic Rock-n-Roll main class Contact Stye World Cup, Hungary was crowned European champions in the Acrobatic Rock-n-Roll Ladies Formation (16 coordinated dancers), and a couple from Ukraine are the new European Junior Champions in Acrobatics Couples dancing.
Three Irish couples made it to the finals at the event (Oliwier Witkowski and Nikola Zdrzalik – 3rd place; Rafal Pavlak-Chiaradia and Amelia Majcherek – 7th place; Wiktor Kulig and Liliana Szafran – 5th place). The Small Acrobatic Rock-n-Roll Ladies Formation, Team Sham-Rock, reached 7th place. Junior couple, (Mikolaj and Maja Muzyk) made it to the Semi-Finals in contact style couples and Denis Jarosz and Justyna Wiecek placed in the top 20. The exciting event in Cork inspired the Irish team to rededicate their efforts for future competitions and the spectacular performances of dancers stirred those watching to consider taking up the sport in the future. How favourable was the event in Cork considered? Athletes from Croatia got tattoos of shamrocks to commemorate the competition.
The Irish organisers, Acrobatic Rock’n’Roll Irish Association (ARIA) would like to thank the MTU staff, Irish Red Cross, who remained onsite for the entire event to aid any stricken dancers, local businesses and companies (Failte Ireland, Meet in Ireland, My Cork Gifts, Flying Tiger, BPerfect Cosmetics Cork, Boots Cork, Lloyds Pharmacy on 8 Grand Parade, Minihans, Ana’s Party Decor, Black Cat Sealants, SuperValu Twohig’s of Kanturk, Discount Chemist Mallow, Monika Sewing, Jack Sparrow Delivery) for supporting the event and to the many volunteers who helped make it a joyous and memorable occasion.
